Glossary

5 PSI Max Inlet Gas Pressure - the circumference of the gas line and PSI Max is the amount of gas pressure the unit can handle.

Air Inlet - the area where air enters into a unit. In an air turnover / rotation unit it is located at the bottom of the unit.

ASHRAE - American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

BTU = British Thermal Units sometimes BTUH for hour ñ international measure of heat.

Building Pressure Switch - can be installed to monitor air pressure.

CFM - Cubic feet per minute - Cubic feet per minute (CFM) is a unit of measurement of airflow that indicates how many cubic feet of air pass by a stationary point in one minute. In other words, it is a unit for measuring the rate of flow of air volume into or out of a space.

CFM Calculation for heat = cubic air mass X air changes / rise = approx. cfm needed

CFM Calculation for cooling = cubic air mass X air changes /60 = approx. cfm needed

Comfort heat/air - heat or air that has the intended purpose of making people comfortable.

Cubic Air Mass - is calculated by multiplying length X width of a building (or area) X ceiling height. height.

Cubic Air Mass X air changes / rise = approx. cfm needed.

Dampers = louvers - open when air blows out and close when not in use. This prevents dirt and air from entering the unit when it's not in use.

Destratification mixes hot and cold air into one, blended temperature.

Dry Bulb: The ambient (surrounding air) temperature taken with a thermometer.

Wet Bulb: The lowest temperature level of the air that can be reached by evaporatively cooling the air.

Wet Bulb Depression: The difference between the Dry Bulb and Wet Bulb temperatures. I.E. if Dry Bulb is 100 degrees (f) and the Wet Bulb is 70 degrees (f), the Web Bulb Depression is 30 degrees (f). The Wet Bulb Depression is used to determine the percent of efficiency of the cooling media.

EAT - Entering Air Temperature

EC - evaporative cooling with slingers

ECM - evaporative cooling using cooling pads called Munters or CELdek ñ EC units built with munters instead of slingers and a wet filter.

ESP, External Static Pressure - Amount of pressure it takes to push air through ducting or over a certain distance. More pressure is needed for long distances or ducting with turns. Factory default is 4/10 of an inch or 0.4î.

Increasing the size of the blower motor provides additional pressure. Bessamaire sells motors ranging in HP from 2 HP to 60 HP.

Our engineers can run a ìfan curveî. Itís a mathematical equation to calculate how fast the blower wheel must turn to generate a certain amount of air velocity or air pressure.

Foot Pound - The foot-pound force or simply foot-pound is an English unit of work or energy. To calculate a foot-pound force, you can use this formula:

W= F … d
Where W is mechanical work, F is force, and d is distance over which the force is applied (measured in the direction of the force).

If face velocity is too high the units will pull water through the unit.

FPM = Feet Per Minute

Galvalume® - 18 gauge steel coated with 55% Aluminum-Zinc alloy - now used on outside of units ñ replaced 16 gauges G-90 galvanized steel. Offers superior corrosion resistance. Developed initially for the roofing industry. Most manufacturers of Galvalume provide a 25 year rust warranty. Bessamaire improved our rust warranty from 5 to 10 years due to the use of Galvalume.

In North America, itís generally known as Galvalume®. In Europe, itís also Aluzinc®. And across the world it may be marketed under Zincalume®, Zintro-Alum®, Galval® and other brand names.

GPM - gallons per minute

Heat Exchangers - heat exchangers are used for indirect gas fire heating.
-1 heat exchanger = approx. 275,000 BTUs
-7 heat exchanger = approx. 2 million BTUs

Heat stress - begins at temperatures over 80† negatively impacting productivity, accuracy, safety and morale.

Hogs Hair Filters (blue) - Synthetic fiber used in filters. Does not support parasites or mold and take only 30 minutes to dry. Hogs hair filters are washable and only need to be replaced once a year. Good idea to hose them off at the beginning of a season. Used as pre-filters until mid-year 2007; still used internally in units as wet and dry filters. 10% efficient.

Coconut Fiber Filters (black) - Beginning in 2007 (mid-year) the pre-filters are made from a treated coconut fiber. Denser and higher efficiency (20%) than Hogís Hair filters (10%). Less prone to water related issues and still does not support parasites or mold.

IAQ - indoor air quality.

LAT - Leaving Air Temperature

MBH - cfm x temperature rise (ex: 30ƒ rise for IDIA units) x 1.08

Micron - Unit of measure of dust and dirt particles. One millionth of meter: a unit of linear measurement equivalent to one-millionth of a meter.

Negative pressure - happens when more air is being pulled out than is being brought in (not a good thing). If air and debris enter into the building when a door is opened the building has negative pressure. If a door is opened and air flows out of the building the building has positive pressure.

Process heat/air - heat or air intended to change the temperature or air associated with a manufacturing process i.e. cooling bread when it emergences from a box oven.

PSI - pressure per square inch.

Psychrometrics - the study of moist air.

Rise - temperature rise needed (difference between coldest or hottest outside temp to desired indoor temp). If entering air = 30ƒ and desired air temperature is 65ƒ than temperature rise is 35ƒ.

Square Feet - The formula for Square feet is: length × width

Stratification - Unmixed air within a confined space, called stratification, is air that is separated into thermal layers due to temperature variations.

VFD ñ Variable Frequency Drive - drive that sits on a HC unit that is used to adjust air volume. VFD is used to dial a 10,000 cfm unit down to 2,000 cfms. Often used in plants where spray painting occurs since correct air pressure is very important.

VFD is rated by size of motor. VFD for a 10 HP motor is small and less expensive than a VFD for a 60 HP motor which is bigger in size and in cost.

W.C. - water column usually 11î in our EC units.

Wet Bulb - The lowest temperature level of the air that can be reached by evaporatively cooling the air.

Wet Bulb Depression - The difference between the Dry Bulb and Wet Bulb temperatures. I.E. if Dry Bulb is 100 degrees (f) and the Wet Bulb is 70 degrees (f), the Web Bulb Depression is 30 degrees (f). The Wet Bulb Depression is used to determine the percent of efficiency of the cooling media.
